Annual Picnic: Starts mid-morning (10 or so) on the third Saturday of June at the Mariposa County Fairgrounds upper picnic area. Everyone brings their own food. Enjoy the picnic, then attend your class reunion that evening. Contact Jim Turner 209 966 3988. 


Annual Meeting and Breakfast: Starts about 10 a.m. on the Sunday before Labor Day, at the high school. Donuts, coffee and juice are served; a donation is requested. 

Both events include drawings for prizes.

Tom DeLaMare named Engineer of the Year

Tom DeLaMare (class of 1955) has been named 2010 Engineer of the Year by the San Joaquin Engineers Council. Read the full story in this link to the Mariposa Gazette.

 

Sheila Bell Tarvin, Class of 1962

Sheila Bell Tarvin passed away August 1, 2009. She graduated  in the class of 1962. In 2007 she hosted a beautiful breakfast with all the trimmings as part of the class of '62 45th reunion celebration.

 

Clinton "Snuffy" Butler, 1938-2008

Clinton "Snuffy" Butler, class of 1956, passed away April 9 at the age of 70. A long time Mariposa resident, Mr. Butler was living n Wilseyville at the time of his passing. He is survived by his wife, Shirley Butler, sons Mike of Mariposa and Mark of Angels Camp, step-daughter Charla Banta of Lodi, stepson and daughter-in-law Ben and Christina Banta Jr. of Manteca, nine grandchildren, and many friends and extended family members. A memorial service was held at the Mariposa Fairgrounds on April 20. 

 

Jesse James McNally, 1941-2008

Jesse McNally, a member of the class of 1959, passed away April 10 at the Veterans Hospital in Fresno, after battling cancer for some time. He served ten years in the Navy, and later worked for welfare departments in Merced and Mariposa Counties. He was the son of the late Merrill and Ruth McNally, who preceded him in death, as did his sister, Jacque Porter of Atwater. He is survived by a sister and brother-in-law, Betsy and Jim Croll of Mariposa, a niece, nephew, great great niece, and numerous members of the extended McNally family. Services were April 19 at Holy Cross Lutheran Church in Atwater, where Mr. McNally resided before his hospitalization.

 

Elaine Wildt Piazza, 1937-2007

We recently received news of the passing of Elaine Wildt Piazza on October 7, 2007, after a long battle with cancer. We had the pleasure of spending some time with her at the Class of 1957 50-year reunion in June, 2007. Elaine worked as a Certified Nursing Assistant in emergency rooms and in home care. Her husband Pete passed away in 1989. They lived in Red Bluff CA and had seven children, eleven grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren. She was buried in Mariposa. (Click for photos)

 

Arline Marjorie Dwyer Fitzgerald, 1921-2007

Arline Marjorie Dwyer  was born in Los Gatos, California, on February 28, 1921 to Henry Valentine Dwyer and Velma Iola Hoerler, and grew up in Hornitos in Mariposa County. Along with her sister Eileen and brother Cecil, she attended the one room schoolhouse in Quartzberg where her mother was the teacher. She graduated from Mariposa High School in 1938.

She married John Leonard Fitzgerald, and had three children. She was a court reporter in San Mateo County and San Francisco for many years. She traveled all over the world, and participated in a month long experiment for NASA looking at the potential effects of weightlessness on women.  

She passed away on October 7, 2007 in Portland, Oregon, and will be buried in her beloved San Francisco. She is survived by her sons Michael John and Jeffrey Alan and his wife Catherine, daughter Kathleen Mary and her husband Robert Albano, her grandchildren Rory, Kelly and Megan Fitzgerald and Brendan Albano, and many loving friends and relatives. Elaine & Ted Takash in Air Force

Elaine Takash, 2006 graduate of MCHS, and her twin brother Ted, a 2005 graduate of Spring Hill High in Mariposa, have been accepted into the United States Air Force.  Elaine graduated from boot camp in May 2007 and will be trained in Air Battle Management (basically an Air Traffic Controller).  There are only two that qualified out of 400.

Elaine was well known for her singing talent for for so many years, singing mostly operatic pieces. (Click for photo)

Ted will finish boot camp in August, and will specialize in law enforcement.

 

Milton Baker, 1916 - 2007

Milton Baker, principal of MCHS from 1955 to 1960, died February 12 in Sonora. He was born June 6, 1916, in Green Camp, OH, and received his bachelor's degree from Ohio State University. He taught music in Ohio for several years. He received a Master's degree in music at the University of Southern California, and a doctorate in administration at UC Berkeley.

He started teaching English and music at MCHS in 1947, replacing Cleo Adelsbach as principal in 1955. Starting in 1960 he was principal at Susanville High for five years, then took the top post at Sonora High, where he completed his career. 

He is survived by his daughter Carol Baker Caywood, her husband Jim (both MCHS graduates); by a sister, Marian Conroy of Ohio, and one grandson.

Mr. Baker and his late wife Florence traveled all over the country after his retirement and served as hosts at U.S. Forest Service campgrounds. He also enjoyed sailing his yacht, reading, playing pool, singing baritone in his church choir, and performing at the Sonora Senior Center .

 

Ellen Dwyer Alvis, 1916 - 2006

Eileen Dwyer (later Eileen Alvis), MCHS class of 1932, passed away in June, 2006 at the age of 90. She was a pharmacist, and lived in LA. (Graduation Photo)

 

Cleo Garland Adelsbach, 1907 - 2003 

Cleo Adelsbach, a 72 year resident of Mariposa, CA, died on February 17, 2003, in a Merced Hospital at the age of 95. Cleo was born on September 13, 1907, in Visalia, CA, to Jacob and Sophie Adelsbach. 

He was a teacher, Vice Principal and the Superintendent of the Mariposa Schools for over 40 years, beginning in the 1930s. Cleo belonged to the Mariposa Masonic Lodge, Eastern Star, JCF Hospital Foundation and the Lions Club. 

Cleo is survived by his daughter, Mary Ann Christensen of WA; step-daughters, Donna Faye Leonard of San Jose, CA, and Terry Anne of Santa Cruz, CA; and his sister, Betty Ann Stalder of Visalia, CA, three grandchildren, and one great-grandchild. 

Burial was in the Mariposa Cemetery, on Saturday, February 22, 2003. Memorial contributions may be made to the Cleo Adelsbach Scholarship fund or to the John C. Fremont Hospital Foundation.
