The photo of the old school (MCHS0122) was provided by Dr. Kathleen Fitzgerald, daughter of Arline Dwyer, class of 1938. We are indebted to Mariposa photographer and historian Leroy Radanovich (class of 1950) for the following: 

The building to the left was a class room building that was used for storage and wrestling class in my day. It burned down in 1949 or '50. (I was there). The two buildings were built in 1917-18. The original contractor went broke and the buildings were finished by the community. Basically the two buildings were wood frame covered with chicken wire and stucco. The state condemned the buildings almost immediately but we still used them until 1950. We used that building for many things including the showers in the basement. Girls too, somewhere up stairs. No classrooms were used because there was no heat in the building. Also the drain from the basement showers was plugged up most of the time so the water would get up to your ankles. The main building was torn down to erect the gym in 1950. The new school (still in use) was built in 1937-38 as a WPA project with a private contractor doing the construction. It opened in '38. J.L Spriggs was principal and Cleo Adelsbach was Vice-Principal. They saved the money for the gym and it was paid for with cash in 1950. It opened my senior year and we were the first basketball team to play in the new facility.

1927 class and sports photos; 1932 student body photo: The 1927 class and sports photos, as well as the student body picture (MCHS240), were provided by Mary Branson-Spears and scanned by Susan Merrill Crandall. There are signs reading 1927 in the class and team pictures, but not in the big group photo. We received another copy of the student body photo from someone in Massachusetts, who said it was from 1932. However, some of the students signed the back of the picture, and some put their graduation year. The readable dates range from 1928 to 1931, so the 1932 date does not compute, and we're assuming it's from close to 1927.

Sluice staff, 1955-56 and 1956-57: Each year for several years, the staff of the school newspaper, The Sluice, assisted in reporting, writing and editing an issue of the weekly Mariposa Gazette. These photos are scanned from the Gazette of May 24, 1956 and May 23, 1957. A staff member wrote an article about the experience each time.

Centennial Plaque: The wording is somewhat misleading when it says "On this site in 1917 construction began for a new high school." The 1917 school was on the grounds that are still part of the school, but it was where the gym now stands, not where the current main building is.
